Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy’s physical education and health curriculum focuses on wellness and the development of physical fitness habits and skills. Our students participate in activities and experiences that emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. According the Center for Disease Control, nearly half of 10-12 year olds do not exercise on a regular basis and 16% of that population is considered “obese.” Our curriculum provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make good choices about their health to lower their risk to diabetes, heart disease and sexually transmitted diseases. We believe that healthy and active students are more motivated to learn and are engaged in the learning process. Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy provides regular, structured opportunities for exercise and health education at least two times per week for each grade. As a public charter school, Thea Bowman Prep is committed to meeting the DC Learning Standards in regard to health education. However, as a school of choice, Thea Bowman Prep believes that parents are the primary educators of their children in health education. The school program supports parents and provides opportunities for families to share their beliefs and values. This is why our school advocates that parents and teachers work together to provide children with the best health information possible. THE GREAT BODY SHOP assists us in building a strong partnership between the home and school by taking a dual approach to health and wellness. Our health curriculum is supported by The Great Body Shop published by The Children’s Health Market 2008.
