As a Core Knowledge school, the fine arts are integrated throughout the curriculum. In addition to weekly, structured classes in music and art, students have the opportunity in class to paint, draw, construct, sing, dance, play instruments and perform. Our art and music teachers are knowledgeable in the ways that the fine arts support the curriculum and work closely with classroom teachers to design lessons that integrate music and art across all content areas. Each year, our students will participate in an art exposition and musical performance for parents and members of the community. Participation in these venues provides an opportunity for our students to demonstrate their talent and receive recognition for their hard work and effort. At Thea Bowman Prep, great works by artists are introduced and studied by students as a means of understanding themselves and others. Students view, listen to, participate in, and discuss the performing arts and literary works from different periods and perspectives. Our students gain a true appreciation of the visual and performing arts as important reflections of the continuum of the human experience. Our fine arts curriculum is supported by Explorations in Art published by Davis Publications, 2008 and Making Music published by Pearson Silver-Burdett, 2008.
