Math is a language we can use to describe events and patterns of the past, to understand relationships in the present, and to make predictions and hypotheses about trends and occurrences in the future. Our math curriculum places a strong emphasis on the student’s development of problem solving strategies that can be employed towards describing and finding solutions to a range of situations of ever-increasing rigor. As students come to us with different mathematical backgrounds and skills, the mathematics curriculum will be differentiated to address these varying degrees of preparedness. The goal of the mathematics program at Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy is to cultivate in every student both the confidence and the proficiency with mathematical concepts and reasoning necessary for successful work with rigorous mathematical topics at the high school and college levels. Our math program also endeavors to develop an enthusiasm and appreciation for the discipline of mathematics and its practical application in everyday life. Upon entry into Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy, a student’s skills in a variety of mathematical contexts are carefully assessed before placement within a specific math class. Therefore, at Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy, there may be two or three different levels or groups of students working on different math assignments simultaneously. Students at Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy will be prepared for the requirements of high school Honors Algebra and Geometry by the time they graduate from eighth grade. Similarly, students needing additional support in mathematics may participate in a program that prepares them for high school algebra or which allows them to complete high school algebra before graduation. Our math curriculum is supported in grades five and six by Saxon Math published by Harcourt-Achieve, 2008.
