| One of the inspirations for our logo has been the concept of medieval trees of virtues and vices, which depict the spectrum of human qualities. These symbolic trees provided a way in which everyday people could reflect and contemplate the associations between good and bad. As with the medieval trees of virtue, the leaves in our logo point upwards symbolizing the elements of good character and the pillars of our school. The four classic Western cardinal virtues – Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude, and Justice – can be traced to Greek philosophy, being identified by both Plato and Socrates and later, Thomas Aquinas. These virtues will be an integral part of character building at Thea Bowman Preparatory Academy. The pillars of Core Knowledge, Caring Community, Character, and College-Bound are also represented by the four leaves. The tree in the logo alludes to the tree of knowledge, enlightenment, and life. It is also crafted to represent the form of a lighted candle icon “filled” with light – light that Thea Bowman carried within her, and that emanates from each member of our school community in their pursuit of living as people who are caring, honest, courageous and just .
